7 MILES : SUNDAY 29th MARCH
The walk is organized by Middleton-in-Teesdale Walkers Are Welcome. It will be guided by a walk leader and will go at a pace that accommodates all participants. A visit to the beautiful South Tyne Valley and an iconic waterfall. Leaving Garrigill the walk follows the South Tyne to the stunning waterfall of Ashgill Force. Those who wish can venture behind the curtain of water. From here the route continues along the South Tyne Way on the northern bank of the river to Tynehead before returning on the southern side of the valley. This walk is free to attend but voluntary contributions of £1 are welcome on the day.
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
Start time and location
Meet at the Tees’pot at 9.20 am or at Garrigill for a 10.00 am. start
Parking
Roadside parking in Garrigill. Anyone planning to meet us at the start of the walk should let us know in advance and should ensure that we have a contact number as to road to Garrigill can become treacherous in bad conditions so we may need to make a late decision to alter our plans.
Difficulty
The walk is on public footpaths or minor roads throughout. Sections on the route are likely to be very wet underfoot and the climb up to the waterfall is over some rock. Those venturing behind the falls do so at their own risk and need to take great care on the slippery surface. Sturdy comfortable waterproof walking boots are recommended & some walkers may want walking poles. We would expect the walk to take approximately 3.5 hours
Who can take part?
If you think the walk is suitable for you, then you are welcome to take part! There is no membership, or commitment to come on future walks, and no need to register in advance, just turn up on the day. The walk is free, however, voluntary donations of £1.00 are welcomed to help cover our insurance costs and other overheads.
The suggested minimum age for participants is 11 for this walk, but all under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Unfortunately this walk is not suitable for dogs and we are unable to accept unaccompanied children.
What to bring
Make sure that you have waterproofs, walking boots, some food and plenty of water. Some walkers may wish to bring walking poles.
